First visits & check-ups

We make your child’s first dental visits positive and fun.

At these visits your child will have a full specialist assessment. We will assess risk factors for decay, discuss growth and development and any contributing habits. Where appropriate we will take dental x-rays and where tolerated we will give oral hygiene instructions and polish your child’s teeth.

What to expect

Your child’s first dental visit to Toothbuds is all about creating a gentle, positive introduction to dental care. We’ll take the time to get to know you and your child, check their teeth and gums, and talk through any concerns you may have. For younger children, the first dental visit is often more about becoming familiar with the sights, sounds, and people in the clinic than about treatment.

Why early visits matter

Starting dental check-ups early helps set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Regular visits allow us to:

  • Monitor your child’s growth and development

  • Prevent small problems from becoming bigger ones

  • Give practical tips on brushing, diet, and oral care

  • Build confidence so your child feels relaxed at the dentist

The New Zealand Dental Association recommends children have their first dental visit by their first birthday, or when their first tooth appears.

How we make it easy

At Tooth Buds, we understand that every child is different. Some are curious and excited, while others may feel shy or anxious. Our specialist team uses age-appropriate communication, a calm and playful approach, and lots of patience to make the experience as comfortable as possible. If treatment is needed, we’ll explain the options clearly and support you in choosing what feels right for your child.

We encourage parents to stay with their child throughout the first visit, and we’re always happy to answer any questions, big or small. Our goal is to make dental check-ups something your child can look forward to.
